Betula papyrifera / Paper Birch

Planted three in 2005.

June 2006

Bartlett is treating all for birch miner, and fertilizing as needed.  They did root collar excavations in summer ‘07.

summer 2010

They are very shallow rooted and don't like hot summers. Birches are messy trees-- they drop a lot of twigs when it's windy.

Bartlett treats them for leaf spot fungus each year -- otherwise these trees get leaf spot and lose all their leaves in August.

With the leaf spot treatments, they look good and fall color is a rich yellow. They look nice contrasted with the red fall color of the maples in the yard.

I keep wishing we had planted them closer together to form more of a little grove. They look like they are in a line here, but they are arranged in a very wide triangle.

How they stand out when all the leaves are down!
